Abstract

Disorders of puberty in girls

The knowledge of normal pubertal development is the basis for the diagnosis of pubertal disorders in girls. Normal variants of puberty must be differentiated from pathological situations. Premature thelarche and premature pubarche belong to normal variants of early puberty, whereas constitutional delay of growth and puberty is a typical variant of late puberty. Precocious puberty and pseudoprecocious puberty must be differentiated if clinical signs of secondary sexual development occur in girls before 8 years of age. Delayed puberty (no sex characteristics in girls > 13,5 years) can be classified in temporary or permanent disorders.
