Abstract

Methods of reproductive medicine: intrauterine insemination, in-vitro-fertilisation (IVF) and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI)

Infertility is an increasing social and medical problem of modern times. Today several techniques and treatment strategies are available. Historically insemination is the oldest way of assisted conception. After the first successful in-vitro-fertilisation (IVF), the widespread use allowed early successes all over the world. In Germany the first IVF-baby was born in 1981. The continuing process of modification and optimization of existing techniques leads to a steady increase in success rates. Even in cases with severe male subfertility the use of intracytoplasmic sperm injection techniques (ICSI) allows successful fertilization and pregnancies.
