Abstract

Acne - a disease with many faces

Acne comes in different manifestations and stages of severity: Acne comedonica and Acne papulopustulosa are mild to moderate forms. They can be treated by topical agents such as retinoids, benzoylperoxide or antibiotics. In women, antiandrogenic pills are helpful.More severe variants are Acne conglobata or Acne fulminans. They require the systemic use of isotretinoin and, initially, corticosteroids. Differential diagnoses are perioral dermatitis and rosacea. With correct classification and choice of optimal therapy, almost every form of acne can be successfully treated within a few months, thus avoiding life-long, ugly scarring.
