Donor insemination

Donor insemination (DI) was shrouded in secrecy for many years. The majority of doctors recommended parents not to disclose their use of DI to their child or to significant others. In the last two decades, the secrecy is increasingly being challenged. This article describes the historic background and current legal and professional regulations. It summarizes scientific knowledge regarding the development of children conceived with the help of DI and our understanding regarding the dynamics in their families. Furthermore, it provides an overview of the motivation and attitudes of semen donors and highlights the need for psychosocial counselling prior to treatment.
