Preimplantation genetic diagnosis

Preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) is the biopsy of cells from a preimplantation human embryo and the genetic analysis of the biopsied cells with regard of certain genetic characteristics of the embryo. In the past PGD was considered to be prohibited by the German Embryonenschutzgesetz (ESchG) (act on protection of the human embryo). The 5th senate of the Federal Court of Germany stated in its sentence from july 2010 that PGD is not forbidden in Germany.

This publication gives an overview on the techniques of embryo biopsy, the most relevant techniques of genetic analysis in PGD, the present legal conditions and the results of PGD.
