Vaccination for gynecologists

The present article is directed at gynecologists and encompasses the current knowledge of vaccination for optimal patient care. Performing vaccinations as a vital preventive measure should be integrated into daily practice by each gynecologist. All standard vaccinations (including the HPV vaccine and vaccinations before and during pregnancy) should be administered as recommended by the German »Standing Committee on Vaccination« (STIKO, Ständige Impfkommission). It is the personal responsibility of each physician to identify and eliminate gaps in immunity in his/her patients. Furthermore, the eradication of vaccine-preventable diseases, vaccine administration, side effects of vaccination, drug safety, legal issues and the need for informed consent and detailed documentation are discussed.
