Neuraxial analgesia for obstetric pain release

Numerous of different analgesic techniques to obtain effective pain release during labour accordant to maternal needs are available. Neuraxial analgesia has to be considered as »Gold Standard« to enable analgesia as and when required during labour work and cesarean section. Focuses of interest are intrathecal and/or epidural applications of local analgetics plus opioids, which can be administrated continuously or in different intermittent techniques. Both, anaesthesiologist and obstetrician, have to decide in favour of patient's preferences taking indications, contraindications, limitations and side-effects of the different techniques into account. Besides existing, well-established neuraxial analgesia techniques new individualized bolus systems, including novel interactive pumps, are up for discussion, aiming to reduce potential side-effects as e. g. limited mobility during labour.
