Abstract

Endocrine disorders of anorexia nervosa

Persistent food restriction in anorexia nervosa (AN) is associated with a global endocrine dysfunction to preserve energy and to protect essential body functions. Clinically, hypothalamic amenorrhoea can be observed preventing an »energy-absorbent« pregnancy as well as impaired skeletal integrity (osteopenia, osteoporosis) as well as changes in electrolyte concentrations which can be life-threatening. Treatment of the eating disorder followed by a weight restoration and recovery of menses are crucial especially for skeletal health. Pharmacological interventions only have shown low effects.
