Abstract

Gastrointestinal health in gynecological practice

Gynecologic tumor screening as well as education about cancer prevention of non-gynecologic tumors is one of the main topics in daily gynecologic routine for patients with a certain risk profile. This gynecologic topic has a tight relation to gastroenterology. Gastroenterological tumors prevention focuses in the last decade mainly on colorectal cancer screening. Screening colonoscopy is the non-controversial gold standard with superior sensitivity and specificity compared to all other colorectal screening modalities. Furthermore, colonoscopy has the ability for simultaneous endoscopic treatment/resection of colorectal polyps as precursors of malignancy. In advance, special consideration has to be payed to the increasing number of patients with familiar colorectal cancer and the prevention of this familiar disorder in the younger population. How- ever, wise screening modalities exist not only for colorectal cancer but – at least in specific risk-constellations – also for other gastrointestinal tumors like adenocarcinoma of the gastroesophageal junction (Barrett´s carcinoma) and newly as well for special entities of pancreatic cancers.
