Preimplantation genetic diagnosis

Preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) is the biopsy of cells from a preimplantation human embryo and the genetic analysis of the biopsied cells with regard of certain genetic characteristics of the embryo. Since an adaption of the German Embryonenschutzgesetz (ESchG) (act on protection of the human embryo) in 2011 PGD is legally accepted under defined conditions.

This publication gives an overview on the techniques of embryo biopsy, the most relevant techniques of genetic analysis in PGD, the present legal conditions and the results of PGD.
