Eating disorders in the clinical praxis

Eating disorders have a long history, already in the ancient world these diseases were described in detail. Based on epidemiological studies, every fifth adolescent will suffer from eating disorder. The symptoms are manifold and sometimes very difficult to diagnose. Beside the organic long term complications the risk for suicide is very problematic.

The most frequent eating disorders are the anorexia nervosa and the bulimia nervosa, the present review focusing on these topics. Both types of eating disorders are typical psychosomatic diseases and begin regularly in the adolescence. The etiology is multifactorial and is the basis for the multimodal treatment strategy.

Various therapies will be applied individually: different approaches of psychotherapy and behavior therapy, psychoanalysis. Gynecologists are for many young girls and women with eating disorders the first doctor. Therefore the gynecologist has a central role in diagnosis and management for these patients.
