Transvaginal ultrasonographic cervical assessment has the potential to predict preterm birth in both low and high risk pregnancies.However, the decision whether to intervene by performing cervical cerclage or not in patients at risk is still controversial.This article will review the various methods to examine the cervix. Furthermore, the effectiveness of prophylactic, therapeutic and rescue cerclage will be evaluated.
